The House That is My Heart

I own a house inside my chest, that is my heart.
I kept you with me inside
Closed the windows and the doors
Thinking that both of us will be happy and safe.

We had awesome times inside my house,
And that made us very happy.
But sometimes I catch you glancing at the window pane, maybe wondering what's outside.
Even the slightest glance upsets me so much, thinking that it was the beginning
Of you forsaking me.

You never spoke a word, never begged me to make you go outside
You say the words that you did before but it didn't feel right.
You were still there but it feels like you were not
And the way that you keep on staring at the window pane has brought me much misery.
So I turned back, bottled up my tears, hugged you and kissed you on the cheek
As I turned the knob and led you to the door.

You went away prancing as I closed the door, ran into a corner and burst into tears
Until a heard a knock, two knocks, three knocks, even people peeking at my window
Asking me to let them in.
As I opened the door, there they were--my family, friends, and new people in my life
Hugging me, talking to me, offering me comfort and encouragement.

And I realized it wasn't a bad idea
To leave the door and the windows open.
